Welcome

Thanks for visiting! Please pardon the dust that's still around. I'm always making adjustments and welcome all comments on my "work in progress."

Life, too, can be a "work in progress".  Sometimes everything looks like it's going well, but feels off or mismatched - and we don't know why. Life might take unexpected turns and we'll experience difficulties with our co-workers, neighbors, friends, family, partners - maybe within ourselves.

Knowing when we could use some support and asking for that support are signs of true insight and strength. Talking with someone may help. A therapist can offer the support you may be looking for  - in an accepting, compassionate space that allows the opportunity to explore what's going on and realize your best hopes.

If you're curious about how I could support you, I warmly invite you to contact me and schedule a brief, 15-minute courtesy phone call.
I may be reached by email at

About Me & My Approach

         Hi, I'm Brandon Hoshiko.

Most folks call me "Brandon", some call me "B", others say, "Hey you!" - some like calling me "Doc,"  but I am not a doctor. I'm a Marriage and Family Therapist. That means I'm a psychotherapist who works with people - individually or together, so we all can achieve more adequate, satisfying, and productive relationships.

You're welcome to call me anything you feel comfortable and I will respond. I think "B" can apply to everyone since "be-ing " ourselves is the only thing any of us can do. But sometimes it's difficult to "be" when so many messages try convincing us what "being" is supposed to look like.

Through psychotherapy, we work together to explore and understand what "being" truly looks like for your own life. Together we can tap into your inherent strengths that allow you to achieve your best hopes and your best relationships - often forming the best relationship with your own self.

Prior to my life as a therapist, I was born in Southern California and earned my high school diploma there. I moved across the country to Brown University where I studied as an undergraduate in Biomedical Ethics and Sociology with extra work in statistics, intimate violence, and adolescent risky behaviors. I came to the Bay Area to teach primary school with Teach for America. I worked in Gifted and Talented Education, Special Education, and program evaluation.

I pursued a Masters Degree in Counseling Psychology with an emphasis in Corrections from Santa Clara University. I continued with additional study in Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) and T.E.A.M. CBT by David Burns, MD. I've active interests in Gender Affirmative care, Trauma informed practices, Brainspotting, and a variety of approaches.

In practice, I pull from many areas to meet the needs of each unique person at each unique encounter. (As a gifted teacher showed me: it's wiser to learn 1,000 things to help one person, than one thing claiming to help 1,000 people.)

I trained clinically at Almaden Valley Counseling Service (AVCS) and served on-campus at elementary, middle, and high schools in Santa Clara County. I was on the AVCS clinical staff supporting agency programs, managing AVCS parenting classes, and presenting to the community on mental wellness topics. I previously taught the Youth Mental Health First Aid group class to adults.

Currently, I maintain a private psychotherapy practice in San José. I volunteer with the County of Santa Clara Suicide and Crisis Services and provide pro-bono therapy services with the Bay Area Frontline Workers Counseling Project. I can also be found facilitating groups and speaking to promoting mental wellness

Personally, I spend time developing a practice in yoga, exercise, and meditation, volunteering, hiking, exploring, reading, and indulging in chocolate while enjoying time with my family.
